Disconnected operation

A deployment mode in which selected workloads can run without continuous connection to the provider’s cloud services.

Disconnected operation is a deployment mode that lets selected workloads continue running without a continuous connection to the cloud provider’s services. Depending on the design, local systems may handle processing and data storage while the connection is unavailable; some management, identity, updates, or support functions may still depend on the provider.

In cybersecurity, this can help maintain critical services during network outages or when policy requires tighter control over external connections. It can also reduce exposure to remote service disruption, but it does not make a workload fully independent or automatically secure. Attackers may exploit gaps in local patching, monitoring, or access controls, while delayed synchronization can create recovery and data-consistency risks. Defenders should identify which functions remain available offline, protect local credentials and data, and regularly test reconnection and recovery procedures.
