A disclosure timer is a countdown attached to a victim listing, leak-site post, or extortion message that signals more information will be published when the clock expires. It is not a technical exploit by itself; it is a pressure tactic designed to make a target, its partners, or the public act quickly before additional details are exposed.
In cyber security, disclosure timers matter because they can amplify uncertainty and force rushed decisions. Attackers use them to increase leverage in ransomware and data-extortion campaigns, especially when only part of the victim information is shown. Defenders should treat the timer as a signal to verify facts, review logs, check identity activity, and confirm backup and recovery readiness, rather than assuming the post proves a breach. A timer may accompany redacted listings, but the presence of a countdown does not confirm the scope, method, or even the existence of compromise.
