Digital monoculture

Heavy reliance on one or a few technology ecosystems, which can increase systemic exposure.

Digital monoculture is heavy reliance on one or a few technology ecosystems, such as the same operating system, office suite, identity platform, or file format across many users and departments. It matters because concentration turns a local weakness into a systemic one: if the shared stack has a security flaw, a bad update, a licensing change, or a support failure, the impact can spread quickly across the whole organization.

In real attacks, monocultures make phishing, malware, and ransomware more effective because the attacker can target one common set of tools and expect wide reach. In defense, the goal is not random variety, but managed diversity: open standards, interoperable systems, phased migrations, testing, and segmentation. These practices reduce vendor lock-in and make it easier to isolate failures, replace components, and keep essential services running when one ecosystem becomes unavailable or compromised.
