Digital Delegation

The assignment of authority to software to act on a person's or organization's behalf.

Digital delegation is the assignment of authority to software to act on behalf of a person or organization. That authority may include clicking through terms, sending orders, approving workflows, or triggering payments. In cybersecurity, the key question is not whether the software “intends” to act, but whether its actions are properly authorized, limited, and attributable.

This matters because delegated software can create real security and liability risk if its permissions are too broad or its instructions are unclear. A malicious prompt, a compromised account, or a misleading website can push an agent beyond its intended scope. Defenders reduce that risk with least-privilege access, explicit approval steps, clear policy boundaries, revocation controls, and detailed logs. Those controls help prove what was allowed, what was executed, and who is responsible when an automated action is disputed.
