Digital backdoor

An undocumented access path that may allow unauthorized entry into a system or device.

A digital backdoor is an undocumented access path in software, firmware, or a device that can let someone bypass normal authentication. It may be added intentionally for maintenance, hidden by a developer or supplier, or introduced maliciously. Because it is not part of the approved design, defenders may not see it in standard account reviews or access-control checks.

Backdoors matter because they turn trust into a security risk, especially in critical infrastructure and remote-managed systems. Attackers may abuse a backdoor to keep persistent access, change settings, or move deeper into a network. Defenders look for unexpected accounts, secret commands, hard-coded credentials, unusual remote-service behavior, and firmware changes. Removing unused access paths, verifying provenance, and monitoring for unauthorized updates are key ways to reduce the risk.
