Digital asset tracing is the process of following cryptocurrency as it moves across addresses, wallets, exchanges, bridges, and other services. Because blockchain transactions are recorded permanently, analysts can reconstruct payment paths even when attackers try to hide behind many wallets or swap services. Tracing is not the same as identifying a person, but it can reveal where funds went and which services touched them.
This matters in cyber security because it helps defenders detect laundering, locate cash-out points, and support freezes, seizures, or sanctions enforcement. In real attacks, stolen funds often move quickly through fresh wallets, DeFi protocols, or mixing tools to blur the trail. Investigators use blockchain analytics, address clustering, transaction pattern analysis, and exchange cooperation to spot suspicious movement and preserve evidence before assets are dispersed further.
