DICOM Structured Reporting

A medical imaging format that links findings and measurements to the source images for later review.

DICOM Structured Reporting (SR) is a medical imaging standard for storing findings, measurements, and observations in a structured format that stays linked to the source image. Instead of keeping a report as free text alone, SR can attach each conclusion to the exact image region, measurement, or study it came from. That makes later review more precise and less dependent on memory or transcription.

In cyber security, that linkage matters because medical records are evidence. If an attacker alters a report, detaches an image reference, or changes metadata without a clear history, the record becomes harder to trust. Defenders use access control, logging, integrity checks, and signed or versioned records to preserve traceability. In AI-assisted imaging workflows, DICOM SR also helps keep machine-generated labels and human sign-off aligned, so the final clinical decision remains auditable and resistant to tampering.
