Diagnostic logging

Recording system events or faults for later analysis.

Diagnostic logging is the recording of system events, errors, warnings, and fault codes so engineers can review what happened after the fact. In vehicles, servers, and security tools, logs help operators trace failures, confirm the timing of events, and narrow down root causes without needing to reproduce the problem immediately.

In cyber security, diagnostic logs are valuable evidence. Defenders use them for monitoring, incident response, and forensics, while attackers may try to delete, alter, or flood logs to hide activity or exhaust storage. Logs can also create risk if they capture sensitive data such as identifiers, tokens, or user actions. Good practice is to limit what is recorded, protect access, define retention periods, and make logs tamper-evident so they support diagnosis without becoming an exposure point.
