A device fleet is the complete set of endpoints an organization must manage, including laptops, phones, tablets, and sometimes kiosks or other specialized devices. In security work, the fleet is not just an inventory list: it is the group of systems that should receive identity checks, configuration policies, patching, encryption, and monitoring.
Device fleet management matters because attackers often look for the weakest or least visible endpoint. An unmanaged tablet, an old laptop, or a personal phone with weak controls can become the entry point for phishing, malware, data theft, or lateral movement. Defenders reduce that risk by enrolling devices into UEM/MDM, enforcing baseline settings, tracking compliance, and removing access from noncompliant endpoints. The larger and more diverse the fleet, the harder it is to keep security consistent, which is why fleet visibility and policy coverage are core parts of modern defense.
