Device-Count Licensing

A subscription model that limits protection to a fixed number of devices.

Device-count licensing is a subscription model that allows security software to be installed and managed on only a fixed number of endpoints, such as laptops, phones, or servers. It is common in small-business security bundles, where the vendor sells protection for a set fleet size rather than for unlimited use.

This matters because coverage gaps create risk: any device outside the license may miss antivirus, backup, password management, or monitoring controls. In real attacks, that can leave an unprotected laptop as the weakest entry point for malware, phishing, or stolen credentials. In defense, the model helps organizations budget and map security tools to actual assets, but only if the device count is accurate and renewals are managed. Good practice is to inventory endpoints, assign licenses to the most important systems first, and review whether all active devices are still protected.
