Device authenticity check

A verification step that helps confirm a hardware device is genuine and has not been tampered with.

A device authenticity check is a verification step used to confirm that a hardware device is genuine, untampered, and running trusted code. In security-sensitive products such as hardware wallets, authenticating the device helps ensure it came from the real vendor and has not been modified with malicious firmware, hidden components, or altered packaging.

This matters because attackers often target the supply chain before a device ever reaches the user. A counterfeit or tampered device can steal secrets, weaken protections, or trick the owner into approving unsafe actions. Defenders use authenticity checks alongside signed firmware, secure boot, serial validation, and attestation features to reduce that risk. In practice, the check may happen during setup or when the device connects to companion software, where the system verifies cryptographic signatures or vendor identifiers. If the check fails, the safest response is to stop using the device and treat it as untrusted.
