Developer workstation

A trusted endpoint used for coding or internal access that may connect to sensitive systems.

A developer workstation is a trusted endpoint used by engineers for coding, builds, source control, remote administration, and access to internal tools. Because it often holds credentials, API tokens, signing keys, or VPN access, it can act as a bridge into sensitive systems far beyond the local machine.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often target developer endpoints to steal secrets, move laterally, or reach production and operational networks through legitimate trust paths. A compromise may begin with phishing, stolen tokens, malicious software, or abuse of remote access, then expand through build systems, code repositories, or privileged accounts. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, endpoint hardening, least privilege, secrets management, device monitoring, and strict separation between development, IT, and production environments.
