Detection tuning is the process of adjusting security rules and alert logic to better reflect an organization’s systems, users, and normal activity. The goal is to identify meaningful threats while reducing false positives and repetitive noise that can overwhelm analysts.
In a SIEM, tuning may involve refining rule conditions, thresholds, or data sources, then reviewing results as the environment changes. For example, defenders can exclude known benign activity or add context that helps distinguish routine behavior from suspicious actions. Poorly maintained detections may miss threats or flood response queues; regular tuning keeps alerts useful and supports faster triage. Changes should be tested and documented so that reducing noise does not create blind spots.
