Derate means to deliberately run an asset below its maximum rated output. In power plants, manufacturing lines, and other industrial systems, operators derate when operating conditions are outside safe or efficient limits, such as high temperature, low cooling capacity, equipment wear, or uncertain sensor readings. The goal is to keep the system stable and avoid damage, trips, or regulatory violations.
In cyber security, derating matters because attacks often target the signals and controls used to decide how hard a plant can run. Manipulated telemetry, disabled monitoring, or disrupted communications can force operators to derate as a precaution, or hide the fact that a derate is needed. Defenders also use controlled derating as a resilience measure: if confidence in automation, instrumentation, or remote access is reduced, lowering output can preserve safety while engineers investigate.
