Deposit Guarantee Scheme

A protection framework that covers eligible deposits up to a legal limit if a bank fails.

A Deposit Guarantee Scheme is a legal protection system that repays eligible bank deposits up to a fixed limit if the bank fails. It usually applies only to covered accounts and only up to the stated maximum, so it is not a blanket guarantee for every balance or product.

In cyber security, this matters because attackers often exploit trust in the safety of banking systems. Phishing pages, fake support messages, and spoofed banking sites may claim that an account, deposit, or promotion is “protected” to persuade victims to log in or transfer funds. Defenders use the scheme as part of customer education: confirm eligibility, verify bank communications through official apps or domains, and never treat a guarantee as proof that a message or website is genuine. The scheme protects money after a bank failure, but it does not protect users from fraud, credential theft, or social engineering.
