Dependency transparency

The ability to see the software, service, or hardware components a system relies on.

Dependency transparency is the ability to see the software, service, and hardware components a system relies on, including sub-tier suppliers and embedded packages. In cyber security, this matters because an organization can only manage risk it can identify. If a vendor’s product depends on a vulnerable library, cloud service, or outsourced hardware part, that hidden dependency can become the real attack path even when the direct supplier looks trustworthy.

Defenders use dependency transparency to map exposure, prioritize patches, and verify claims from vendors. Tools such as software bills of materials, supplier inventories, and contract requirements help reveal what is inside a product and who supports it. Attackers exploit opaque dependencies by targeting forgotten components, compromised update channels, or nested third parties. Better visibility turns supply-chain security from guesswork into a practical control.
