Demand validation is the process of checking whether real buyers, users, or victims exist before a larger investment is made. In cyber security, the term is useful because many criminal operations are built like businesses: attackers want proof that a lure, exploit, stolen data set, or malware service can attract demand before they spend more on infrastructure, evasion, or distribution.
In practice, demand validation can appear when threat actors test a phishing page, seed stolen credentials in underground markets, or offer malware-for-rent to see whether other criminals will pay. Defenders use the same idea in reverse by measuring whether a campaign, warning, or control is producing real engagement, not just noise. The value is simple: evidence comes before scale. Validating demand early helps avoid wasted resources, reduces exposure to bad assumptions, and makes it harder for both attackers and operators to overcommit to a strategy that has no real market.
