Decomposition

Breaking a complex task into smaller parts that are easier to understand and manage.

Decomposition is the practice of breaking a complex task into smaller, easier-to-handle parts. In cyber security, that means separating a problem such as an intrusion, a malware sample, or a risky system change into distinct pieces like initial access, privilege escalation, persistence, and data theft. This makes analysis clearer and helps defenders focus on one component at a time.

It matters because attacks rarely succeed through one simple step. Security teams use decomposition to map an incident, assign work, and find the weakest link. For example, a suspicious email can be examined by splitting it into sender reputation, links, attachments, and payload behavior. Attackers also use decomposition when they build tools or campaigns in stages, which makes each stage easier to test, modify, or hide. Good incident response depends on this skill: if you can separate the problem, you can investigate it, contain it, and fix it more effectively.
