Decision makers

The people who influence or approve a purchase in a business setting.

Decision makers are the people in a business who can approve, block, or strongly influence a purchase. In cybersecurity, this usually means managers, procurement staff, IT leaders, finance teams, and executives who weigh risk, budget, and business impact before a security tool, service, or policy is adopted.

They matter because attackers often target the people with authority instead of the technical team. Phishing, business email compromise, and fake vendor messages are designed to reach decision makers who can authorize payments, reset controls, or share sensitive information. Defenders also need to identify decision makers early so security teams can explain risk clearly, get timely approvals, and avoid delays in response, patching, or vendor selection. Knowing who the decision makers are helps turn security from a technical discussion into an operational decision.
