Deception technology

Security controls that use fake or monitored assets to study attacker behavior.

Deception technology is a set of security controls that use fake or closely monitored assets to lure attackers, observe their actions, and turn intrusion activity into evidence. These assets can include decoy servers, false credentials, planted files, or instrumented services that look real enough to attract probing.

It matters because attackers often start quietly with reconnaissance, credential checks, and small test actions before they commit to deeper compromise. Deception tools can expose those early steps with high-confidence alerts, helping defenders distinguish real intrusions from routine background noise. In attacks, they may reveal which systems an intruder touches, how fast they adapt, and whether they attempt lateral movement. In defense, they work best alongside logging, endpoint monitoring, identity controls, and incident response. A well-designed deception layer does not stop every attack, but it can make stealth visible and give teams earlier, more useful intelligence.
