Decarbonization is the effort to cut greenhouse-gas emissions by using cleaner power, better efficiency, and less wasteful systems. In modern data centers and cloud environments, it often means choosing low-carbon electricity, improving cooling, and scheduling workloads to reduce energy spikes. The goal is not only environmental: lower energy use can also improve reliability and reduce operating risk.
In cyber security, decarbonization matters because the systems that manage power, cooling, and building automation are part of the attack surface. An attacker who disrupts energy management, monitoring, or grid-connected controls can cause outages, force failover, or increase costs. Defenders use segmentation, access control, telemetry, and secure automation to keep efficiency projects from becoming security weaknesses. In practice, decarbonization and security are linked: a resilient environment is easier to harden, and a hardened environment is easier to run efficiently.
