De-aging is a broad term for reducing signs of age. In biology, it can describe attempts to limit age-related changes in cells or tissue. In cyber security, the word more often appears in synthetic media, where an image, video, or avatar is edited to make a person look younger by removing wrinkles, changing skin texture, or altering facial shape.
This matters because age can be used as an identity signal. De-aged media can support impersonation, social engineering, account fraud, or bypasses of age-sensitive verification systems. Defenders look for inconsistent lighting, unnatural facial motion, and provenance clues such as metadata or content signatures. Liveness checks, strong identity verification, and trusted capture pipelines help reduce the risk of manipulation.
