Date code

a marking that indicates when a component was manufactured.

A date code is a marking on a component that indicates when it was manufactured, or at least the production batch and time period. On chips, connectors, and other parts, it helps engineers estimate age, match parts to known revisions, and tell whether a component could realistically belong in a given system.

In cyber security, date codes matter for hardware trust and supply-chain checks. Analysts use them to spot counterfeit or relabeled parts, identify obsolete components in legacy equipment, and verify whether replacements fit the expected lifecycle. A suspicious date code can also suggest tampering, recycled hardware, or an out-of-family part that deserves closer inspection. Date codes are not proof by themselves, but they are a useful clue when documentation is missing and defenders need to confirm what is actually on the board.
