Database repair

A recovery step that attempts to fix damaged or inconsistent data structures.

Database repair is a recovery step that attempts to fix damaged or inconsistent database structures so the data can be read again. It is used when a database has been left in an unclean state by a crash, power loss, faulty storage, interrupted writes, or corrupted log files. Depending on the system, repair may rebuild indexes, reconcile metadata, or remove records that cannot be safely trusted.

In cyber security, database repair matters because attackers and failures both can damage data integrity. Ransomware, destructive tampering, and storage faults may all leave databases partially usable but unsafe to mount. Repair tools help defenders triage the damage, recover selected records, and determine whether restoration from backup is needed. They are useful, but they are not a substitute for tested backups or a full incident response plan.
