Database pooling

Sharing infrastructure across multiple databases so idle capacity can be reused instead of reserved per system.

Database pooling is a deployment model where multiple databases share common compute, storage, or management infrastructure instead of each system reserving its own idle capacity. The goal is better utilization: when one workload is quiet, another can use the spare resources. In modern distributed database environments, pooling is often paired with quotas, admission control, and tenant isolation so each database still behaves like a separate service.

It matters in cyber security because shared infrastructure changes the blast radius. A misconfigured pool can let one noisy or compromised workload consume resources from others, causing denial of service or performance degradation. The pooling control plane also becomes a high-value target, since it may govern provisioning, routing, and policy across many databases. Defenders use strong access control, network segmentation, monitoring, and capacity limits to keep pooled systems efficient without weakening isolation.
