Data scoping

Limiting which datasets a model or workflow can access to reduce exposure and misuse risk.

Data scoping is the practice of limiting which datasets a model, agent, or workflow can access. Instead of giving an AI system broad access to files, records, logs, or databases, defenders constrain it to only the data needed for a specific task. This reduces exposure of sensitive information and limits what an attacker can steal or manipulate if the system is compromised.

In cyber security, data scoping matters because AI tools often sit near high-value assets such as incident reports, internal tickets, or classified mission data. If access is too broad, prompt injection, misconfigured connectors, or stolen credentials can turn a helpful assistant into a data leak. Strong implementations use least-privilege service accounts, allowlists, row- or document-level filters, and separate environments for different sensitivity levels. On the defense side, scoping also improves auditability, because teams can see exactly what data a model was allowed to use and why.
