Data centre

The physical infrastructure that houses servers, storage, cooling, and network systems for digital services.

A data centre is the physical facility that hosts servers, storage, networking gear, and the cooling and power systems needed to run digital services. It may be operated by a company, a cloud provider, or a government agency, and it is often built for high availability with redundant links, generators, and backup systems.

In cyber security, a data centre matters because it is part of the attack surface. Physical access, misconfigured network zones, weak remote management, or compromised admin credentials can expose large volumes of data and many connected systems at once. Attackers may try to disrupt services through ransomware, sabotage, or by targeting supporting infrastructure such as power and connectivity. Defenders protect data centres with layered controls: badges and biometrics, cameras, segmented networks, hardened management interfaces, logging, monitoring, and resilience planning for outages. When critical services or AI workloads run there, the data centre becomes a strategic asset, not just a server room.
