Data analytics

The use of data to identify patterns, trends, and anomalies that are hard to see in raw records.

Data analytics is the use of structured data to find patterns, trends, and anomalies that are difficult to spot in raw records. In cyber security, it turns logs, alerts, network flows, and account activity into evidence that can be compared over time. Good analytics helps teams answer practical questions: which user behavior is normal, which system is changing too fast, and which event sequence suggests misuse rather than routine activity?

It matters because attackers often hide inside noise. Analytics can reveal suspicious login spikes, unusual data transfers, repeated contract or configuration changes, or a small deviation that becomes clear only when many records are joined together. Defenders use the same approach for detection, investigation, and control validation, while attackers may try to evade it by blending in, spreading activity across time, or corrupting the data source. Its value depends on data quality, consistent logging, and a trustworthy audit trail.
