Cycloidal gearbox

A gear mechanism that uses an offset motion path to transfer rotation in a compact design.

A cycloidal gearbox is a compact gear mechanism that converts fast input rotation into slower, higher-torque output by following an offset motion path. Unlike simple gear trains, it uses a cycloidal disc and multiple contact points, which can spread load across more of the mechanism. That makes it attractive when space is limited but precision and strength still matter.

In cyber security, cycloidal gearboxes show up in robots, cameras, drones, locks, and industrial devices that rely on precise motion. They matter because the physical mechanism can become part of the attack surface: wear, misalignment, or poor manufacturing can weaken a control system, while tampering or reverse engineering can reveal how a device works. Defenders evaluate these gearboxes for reliability, durability, and resistance to manipulation, especially in safety-critical or remotely managed equipment.
