Cyber-espionage

Covert digital activity aimed at gathering sensitive information.

Cyber-espionage is covert digital activity designed to gather sensitive information without being noticed. Unlike destructive attacks, its goal is usually long-term intelligence collection: emails, documents, credentials, source code, policy files, or strategic plans. Targets often include governments, defense firms, critical infrastructure, and financial organizations.

It matters because espionage campaigns are built for stealth. Attackers may use phishing, malware, stolen credentials, cloud abuse, or automation to move through a network, find valuable data, and exfiltrate it slowly. Defenders look for unusual logins, abnormal document access, suspicious tool use, and data transfers that do not match normal business activity. Strong identity controls, least privilege, segmentation, logging, and data-loss monitoring are key defenses. In modern cases, AI tools can be used to speed up reconnaissance or collection, but the core mission remains the same: quietly steal information.
