CWE-1287

A weakness class for improper validation of the specified type of input.

CWE-1287 is a weakness class for improper validation of a specific type of input. In practice, it means a system accepts data from a source it should treat as untrusted, but it fails to check whether that data is valid, well-formed, or expected for the context. That gap can let malformed input influence device behavior in unsafe ways.

This matters in cyber security because validation bugs often become denial-of-service conditions, logic errors, or trust-boundary failures. In industrial systems, a bad input may not steal data or run code, but it can still force a controller or web interface into a protection state, disable remote management, or interrupt availability. Defenders reduce this risk by validating all inputs at boundaries, rejecting unexpected formats early, and testing parsers and backend interfaces with edge cases. When a product is mapped to CWE-1287, it is a signal to review how it handles incoming data before it reaches critical functions.
