Customization

Modifying a product so it behaves more like the user wants.

Customization is modifying a product’s settings, software, hardware, or interface so it better fits a user’s needs. It can range from changing default controls to adding a separate controller or altering how a device responds to commands.

In cyber security, customization can improve usability and protection, such as configuring stricter access controls or tailoring security alerts. It also matters because changes may introduce weaknesses if they bypass safeguards, use insecure components, or leave settings poorly maintained. Attackers can exploit insecure custom configurations, while defenders should document changes, review permissions, and test modified systems. A custom controller for a camera mount is a simple example of adapting a product for more direct control; in computing, the same idea applies, but security must remain part of the design.
