Customer Identity and Access Management, or CIAM, is the identity layer that handles external users such as customers, partners, and contractors. It covers sign-up, sign-in, password reset, multi-factor authentication, consent, profile data, and account recovery. Unlike workforce identity systems, CIAM is built for large, unpredictable user populations and must balance security, usability, and scale.
CIAM matters because customer access is often the front door to an application and a high-value target for attackers. Common abuse includes credential stuffing, account takeover, fake sign-ups, and session hijacking. Strong CIAM deployments reduce this risk with MFA, bot detection, anomaly checks, fraud signals, and standards like OpenID Connect and OAuth 2.0. In defense, teams also use CIAM to centralize policy, limit data exposure, and keep an exit path open so identity controls do not become vendor lock-in.
