Customer-facing services

public websites or apps used by customers to access a company.

Customer-facing services are the public websites, mobile apps, and online portals that people use to interact with a company. In retail, banking, travel, and many other sectors, these systems are the “digital front door” for shopping, account access, support, and payments.

They matter in cybersecurity because they are often the first systems users notice when something goes wrong. Attackers may target them directly with credential stuffing, web exploits, or denial-of-service attacks, while defenders may take them offline during an incident to contain damage. Even when no data theft is confirmed, prolonged outages can disrupt business, weaken trust, and signal a larger security or recovery problem behind the scenes.
