Custom fabrication

Building a part to fit a specific need instead of using a standard component.

Custom fabrication is the practice of building a part to solve a specific problem instead of relying on a standard, off-the-shelf component. In cyber security, it often shows up in hardware labs, physical security assessments, and device modification work, where unusual shapes, connectors, or mounting points need a precise fit.

It matters because many attacks and defenses depend on physical access and reliable hardware. Attackers may use custom-fabricated tools, brackets, shims, or enclosures to bypass locks, probe devices, attach implants, or hide malicious components. Defenders use the same approach to create test fixtures, tamper-resistant mounts, secure enclosures, and recovery tools that match an exact system layout. Good fabrication is not just about making something fit once; it must survive vibration, heat, repeated use, and maintenance without failing.
