CTF

Capture The Flag, a controlled cybersecurity exercise where participants solve challenges or exploit test systems.

CTF stands for Capture The Flag, a controlled cybersecurity exercise where participants solve puzzles, analyze code, or exploit test systems to obtain a hidden “flag.” It is widely used for training, hiring, and security research because it lets defenders practice real techniques without risking production assets.

CTFs matter because they simulate the steps attackers use in the wild: recon, exploitation, privilege escalation, and proof of access. In a well-designed environment, the targets are isolated and the rules are explicit. Problems arise when a tool, script, or AI agent mistakes public infrastructure for a CTF target, because actions meant for a sandbox can affect real systems. Defenders use CTF-style labs to test detections, harden controls, and verify that egress limits, scope boundaries, and monitoring stop unsafe behavior before it leaves the lab.
