Cryptographic library

Software that provides encryption, decryption, hashing, and certificate-related functions to other programs.

A cryptographic library is software that other programs call to perform encryption, decryption, hashing, digital signatures, and certificate handling. Instead of each application implementing its own math and protocol logic, it relies on a shared library such as OpenSSL or wolfSSL to handle security-critical operations consistently.

These libraries matter because they often sit deep in the software stack and are used by web servers, VPNs, embedded devices, and applications that speak TLS. A flaw in a cryptographic library can therefore affect many products at once, even when users never see the library directly. In attacks, bugs may enable crashes, denial of service, certificate validation failures, or other weaknesses in trust decisions. In defense, teams patch the library, rebuild dependent software, and test TLS handshakes and certificate flows to make sure the update did not break connectivity. Tracking where a library is embedded is a key part of vulnerability management.
