Cryptocurrency wallet theft is the unauthorized taking of the information that controls a digital wallet, such as private keys, recovery seed phrases, browser-stored credentials, or active account sessions. With that access, an attacker can move funds, approve transactions, or lock the rightful owner out of the wallet.
This matters because blockchain transfers are usually irreversible: once assets are sent, recovery is difficult or impossible. In real attacks, wallet theft often follows phishing, malware, fake developer tools, or social engineering that persuades a user to reveal secrets or run malicious code. Defenders reduce risk by isolating wallet-bearing systems, using hardware wallets or multisignature approvals, protecting seed phrases offline, and treating any request to enter wallet credentials as suspicious.
