A credit limit is the maximum amount a cardholder can spend on a credit card under the product’s terms. It sets the ceiling for purchases, cash withdrawals, transfers, and other permitted activity. In app-driven banking, the limit is often visible and manageable in software, which makes it a key control point rather than just a number on a statement.
From a cyber-security perspective, the credit limit matters because it defines the damage boundary if an account is compromised. An attacker who gains access to a card app, stolen credentials, or a hijacked phone may try to use the available credit before fraud controls react. Defenders reduce this risk with strong authentication, transaction alerts, spending controls, device security, and anomaly detection. Lower or adjustable limits can also reduce exposure, while real-time monitoring helps spot unauthorized use quickly.
