Credible alternative

A replacement option that is realistic, tested, and available within the needed window.

A credible alternative is a replacement option that is realistic, tested, and available within the needed window. In security and procurement, it is not enough to have a name on a list; the backup product, provider, or process must actually be deployable before the current contract, tool, or service expires.

This matters because security teams depend on leverage and continuity. If a vendor, managed service, or cloud platform becomes unavailable, too costly, or untrustworthy, a credible alternative reduces lock-in and helps maintain control during renewal, incident response, or recovery. In real-world defense, that means keeping a warm standby, validating migration steps, and periodically proving that the substitute still works. Attackers also exploit the absence of credible alternatives by targeting concentrated suppliers or dependencies, knowing the victim may have few fast options. A backup that has not been tested is only theoretical; a credible alternative preserves negotiating power and operational resilience.
