CPT and HCPCS are US medical billing code sets used to describe procedures, services, and supplies in claims and revenue-cycle systems. CPT mainly covers physician and outpatient services, while HCPCS adds other products and services, including items billed to insurers and government programs. In healthcare software, these codes sit in charge masters, claim workflows, and reference tables that convert real-world care into billable data.
From a cyber-security perspective, CPT/HCPCS data matters because it can expose what a provider does, how it bills, and which services it depends on. If attackers steal these tables, they may learn operational details, target staff with more convincing phishing, or manipulate billing records for fraud. Defenders protect them with least privilege, strong logging, and integrity checks because even non-clinical code data can reveal sensitive business context and support downstream abuse.
