cPanel & WHM

A Linux hosting control panel suite used to manage servers, accounts, and administrative tasks.

cPanel & WHM is a Linux hosting control panel suite used to manage websites, server settings, user accounts, email, backups, and administrative tasks. In practice, cPanel handles customer-facing hosting features, while WHM (WebHost Manager) provides the higher-privilege control layer for server administration.

It matters in cyber security because it concentrates a lot of trust in one management stack. If an attacker gains access to a host that runs cPanel & WHM, flaws in plugins, scripts, or file permissions can sometimes be used to move from a low-privileged foothold to stronger control over the server. Defenders pay close attention to update status, access controls, and ownership on configuration and backup files. In real environments, attacks often target weakly protected extensions or misconfigured administrative paths, while defenses focus on patching, least privilege, monitoring, and hardening the root-managed WHM layer.
