Controlled change

A careful, traceable modification that limits unintended side effects.

Controlled change is a careful, traceable modification to a system, device, or process that is designed to limit unintended side effects. In security work, this usually means making one change at a time, recording what was changed, keeping approvals or tickets, and preserving a rollback path if the result is worse than expected.

It matters because many security failures come from uncontrolled edits: a rushed config tweak can break authentication, expose a service, or hide evidence from logs. Defenders use controlled change in patching, firewall updates, incident response, and infrastructure maintenance so they can test impact, audit decisions, and recover quickly if needed. Attackers also rely on the opposite behavior—silent, untracked changes—to add persistence, weaken defenses, or alter settings without detection. Strong change control makes those unauthorized modifications easier to spot and undo.
