Continuous health data

Health information collected over time rather than only during clinic visits.

Continuous health data is health information collected over time, such as heart rate, sleep, glucose, movement, or blood pressure readings from wearables, home sensors, and connected apps. Unlike a one-time clinic record, it creates a timeline of a person’s condition, habits, and environment. In cyber security, that makes it highly sensitive: the data can reveal routines, medical status, and even when someone is away from home.

Attackers may target these systems through stolen app credentials, insecure APIs, cloud misconfigurations, or compromised devices. They can steal data for extortion, resell it, or alter readings to cause confusion and unsafe decisions. Defenses focus on encryption in transit and at rest, strong authentication, least-privilege access, secure device pairing, audit logs, and data minimization. Good governance also matters: keep only what is needed, limit who can view it, and protect integrity so clinicians and users can trust the signal, not just the storage.
