Context menu

The right-click menu that exposes actions for files and folders.

A context menu is the right-click menu in Windows and other operating systems. It shows actions that apply to the selected file, folder, or object, such as Open, Copy, Delete, or properties and app-specific commands. In Windows Explorer, this menu is built dynamically from built-in functions and registered shell extensions.

Context menus matter in cyber security because they are part of the desktop attack and reliability surface. Every added extension is another component that can slow Explorer, break expected behavior, or hide useful options in a crowded list. Defenders often review which shell extensions are installed, because unwanted or malicious integrations can add persistence points, intercept user actions, or make a compromised system harder to manage. A sluggish or cluttered right-click menu is often a usability issue, but it can also be a sign to audit what software is hooking into the shell.
