Context-aware security is defensive logic that changes its behavior based on what an asset is doing, who or what it serves, and how risky the current situation is. Instead of treating every alert, user, or device the same, it uses factors such as process state, asset role, location, time, and safety dependency to decide whether to monitor, block, isolate, or defer action.
This matters because the same security event can mean very different things in different environments. In industrial or hybrid IT/OT systems, an aggressive response may disrupt control traffic, alarms, or safety logic even when no attacker is present. In practice, context-aware defenses help reduce false positives, avoid self-inflicted outages, and prioritize high-value assets. Attackers can exploit environments that lack context by blending into normal operations or triggering automated responses that cause confusion. Good context-aware security makes detection and response safer, more precise, and better aligned with the real operational risk.
