Context-aware analysis is the practice of evaluating data or user activity by combining the content itself with surrounding signals such as the user identity, device status, application, destination, location, or time of access. Instead of judging a message, file, or API call in isolation, the security system asks whether the context makes the action normal, risky, or forbidden.
This matters because many attacks look harmless until context is added. A credentialed user uploading sensitive data to an unfamiliar cloud app, pasting secrets into a chatbot, or sending records to an external domain may trigger stronger controls than the same action inside an approved business app. Defenders use context-aware analysis in DLP, CASB, email security, and conditional access to block, warn, quarantine, or log activity. It helps reduce false positives, adapt policies to different teams or destinations, and catch exfiltration paths that content-only rules miss.
