Context analysis is the process of identifying the internal and external factors that shape an organization’s risk profile. In cyber security, that means looking at business goals, critical assets, staff skills, suppliers, regulations, threat exposure, and the wider environment the organization operates in. The result is a clearer view of what needs protection, what threats matter most, and which controls are worth prioritizing.
This matters because attacks rarely succeed in a vacuum. A phishing campaign is more dangerous when users are undertrained, a ransomware incident is more damaging when backups are weak, and a supply-chain compromise is more likely when third-party access is poorly governed. Defenders use context analysis to align policies, monitoring, and incident response with real-world risk, while auditors use it to check whether security decisions match the organization’s actual operating conditions.
