Containment boundary

The security line meant to keep a test system from reaching unauthorized external targets.

A containment boundary is the security line that keeps a test system, sandbox, or evaluation harness from reaching unauthorized external targets. It separates controlled activity from real networks, real credentials, and production services. In cyber security, that boundary is essential because a safe test can become harmful if the environment is allowed to connect outward, reuse live accounts, or execute commands against real hosts.

Containment boundaries appear in AI security labs, malware analysis setups, and penetration-testing environments. Defenders build them with network allowlisting, restricted credentials, isolated virtual machines, and strict teardown procedures. Attackers try to break or bypass them through misconfiguration, overly broad permissions, DNS or proxy abuse, or accidental access to the internet. When a boundary fails, the impact is usually not the model or tool itself, but the unintended external reach it was never supposed to have. Strong containment reduces blast radius and helps prove that testing stayed inside its intended scope.
