Configuration tracking

Recording changes so a build or system can be understood and reproduced later.

Configuration tracking is the practice of recording changes to hardware, software, settings, and build artifacts so a system can be understood and reproduced later. It creates a history of what changed, who changed it, when it changed, and why. In a simulator build, that might include control mappings, labels, firmware versions, and wiring updates; in a server or application, it includes code revisions, packages, policies, and infrastructure settings.

In cyber security, configuration tracking matters because many attacks succeed by changing trusted systems without being noticed. Unexpected edits can weaken access controls, alter logging, or introduce malicious code into a build pipeline. Good tracking helps defenders detect unauthorized changes, roll back to a known-good state, compare environments, and prove what was running at a given time. It is a core part of secure operations, incident response, and supply-chain defense.
